Life's Too Short

Okay, I have to get something off my chest and it has to do with the mantra that life is too short or whatever BS, so you can and SHOULD do whatever you want, even if you know it's not the best idea.

Okay, it's VERY true that you could die at any given moment. You could have a heart attack. Someone could shoot you dead. You could drown in the bathtub. You could get hit by a speeding truck crossing the street (or even sitting in your living room... what's the world coming to??)

But ya know what? That doesn't give you an excuse to be irresponsible and frivolous.

"Well, I wasn't going to buy this $850 purse, but then I said to myself 'life's too short, treat yourself!'"
You're a dumb biotch.

I'm sorry, that was mean. I take it back.

But ya know what? $850 is a lot of freaking money. And if you KNOW that and you have a hard time handing your debit/credit card over, it's probably because you realistically can't afford it. If you really COULD afford it, you probably wouldn't bat an eyelash at that price tag or have to convince yourself that it's okay to spend that much on it. And if that's the way it is when you spend that much on something unnecessary (I know, BLASPHEMY), you could probably put that money towards something a little better... like paying your bills, feeding your kids/pets, or feeding the starving kids in Africa.

But what the hell? You may be living in a cardboard box on the side of the highway, but ya know what? You'll have a freaking KILLER purse. You can carry your socks and undies to the gas station down the street to wash them.

Same goes for when you go out with your friends and you say you're gonna pass on that chocolate lava cake topped with ice cream, sprinkles, hot fudge, potato chips and whatever the hell else people are coming up with these days.

They always say "come on girlfrannnnn, it's a special occasion! Today is the 3 day 6.75 hour anniversary of when Susie bought this CA-RAZY hot purse for $850! Life is too short to miss out on the good things!" At which point you grab your shovel spoon, and dig in.

For some people, it's not a problem. So you don't wanna have dessert because a) you're short on cash, maybe you don't like chocolate, or you could potentially plan to drink your dessert in the form of 15 duck farts at the bar on your way home. However, I've noticed that more often than not, it's because they are probably watching what they eat. FOR A REASON.

It's true, life IS too short for that person. Because they are diabetic and the last thing they need is 6500 calories of chocolate coma. Life hasn't been too short for the to get their fill of crappy food, or else I wouldn't they wouldn't be overweight in the first place.

I'm sorry if some people may take this personally for some reason. This is just my opinion. But I spend hours a day looking at people's accounts that abuse their money and then can't make their car payments or house payments, or want overdraft fees reversed because now they can't put gas in their car to take their kids to school.
And don't get me wrong, I spend my fair share of money on things I really don't need. But when I make a big purchase, it's because I've been saving for 6 months for it. I want the Deadliest Catch seasons on DVD... all 7 seasons for $175 (go ahead, judge me. I DARE YOU.) I've been squirreling money away for a couple months. And I'm not gonna buy it until I know I have enough so that it won't leave me hurtin' until next payday.

Also, as someone who is trying to lose weight, I KNOW that once you get derailed from your diet, it can spiral outta control REAL fast. So when I see people who are unhappy with themselves and they way they look and feel, and they're just going right along with a dozen Krispie Kremes MmMmMmM...) or eating half a pizza to themselves because "life's too short", it pisses me off. Because your short life could be SO MUCH BETTER if you would just take care of yourself. I know I'm guilty of eating things that make me feel like bunghole. And for missing a workout therefore making me feel guilty.

Anyways, that's what I have to say about that right now. It was something that's been eating at me, so I had to get it off my chest.

Good post, Carly. :) I in a huge fan of life in moderation. I don't do reckless things, but I do jump on opportunities that don't come around very often, which is why I save money. At the time I don't know what I'm saving for, but I sure as hell don't wanna pass things up because I wasn't prepared. Such as trips to NZ and Turkey.

And eating dessert at restaurants... I never give in, same with ordering any drinks with lots of calories. It's just not worth it to me, I'd rather save my calories and dollars on my dinner. :)
