Book Review x 2

Since I've been too busy to blog the past few weeks, I have two books to tell you about today.

1. Between, Georgia

I've passed this book up a few times, but when I saw it at a garage sale, I figured I should probably read it, and I'm glad I did.

Here's the description from the back:

Nonny Frett knows the meaning of "rock" and "hard place" better than any woman ever born. She's got two mothers, "one deaf-blind and the other four baby steps from flat crazy." She's got two men: her husband, who's easing out the back door; and her best friend, who's laying siege to her heart in the front yard. In the middle of a feud that's igniting a stash of highly flammable secrets, Nonny must now make some hard choices about who she wants to be-and which way is truly home.

I really enjoyed this book... I don't know what else to say about it to explain WHY I liked it. I just did. It had an unusual plot, not something you read about in every other "chick lit" book. The only thing that I struggled with was figuring out what place in time we were working with. I mean, somethings that were said made it seem like this was happening a long time ago, and then other things brought me back to the reality that it was more modern than that. Maybe it just has to do with the setting... a little town in Georgia that might be behind the times. But I don't know. 


Overall, I really liked the book and would give it probably 4 out of 5 stars.


2. Breaking Silence

I got this book on a whim at Costco while i was spending my mom's money.
Here's the synopsis:


The Slabaugh family are model Amish farmers, prosperous and hardworking, with four children and a happy extended family. When the parents and an uncle are found dead in their barn, it appears to be a gruesome accident: methane-gas asphyxiation caused by a poorly ventilated cesspit. But in the course of a routine autopsy, the coroner discovers evidence of foul play. Who would want to make orphans of the Slabaugh children? And is this murder somehow related to a recent string of shocking hate crimes against the Amish?
Kate is determined to bring the killer to justice. The state sends in agent John Tomasetti, with whom Kate has a long and complex relationship, and together they search for the link between the crimes -  and uncover a dark secret at work beneath the placid surface of this idyllic Amish community.


This book gave a new twist to your common crime novel. The only thing I wish I had known before was that this is the 3rd book in a series. So now I have to go back and read the first 2. Hate it when that happens...


So, both these books were good. Definitely worth the read.
